What to wear on your Engagement Session

Engagement sessions are always so much fun! They’re an opportunity to get to know our couples and are a great way to get to know your photographer as well. You also get to have great photos for your save the dates. The big question is… what should you wear?!!

Engagement sessions are a great way to get to know your photographer and get great photos of you and your fiance’ , but when it comes to what to wear, that sometimes can be a big question. So like always, based on my experience, I put together this list of recommendations that I consider the most important when it comes to choosing your outfits.

  1. CHOOSE YOUR LOCATION

The first decision you’ll need to make when you schedule your engagement session is where to do it. Once you’ve figured that part out, try to keep it in mind. If you’ve chosen a beach you might not want to wear your stilettos. If you’ve chosen the winter time you might not want to wear short sleeves. So you get the point right? The location will determine what suits the best for you. After all, remember, you want to look your best!

  2. COLOR COORDINATE, DON’T COLOR MATCHING

While you’re planning this together with your significant other, You should each aim to wear a different dominant color, but stay within a similar color palette family. So if you’re wearing a blush dress, soft blue earrings and nude heels (blush being your dominant color), then he could wear a navy coat with gray pants, paired with brown leather shoes and white or lighted tone dress shirt. I recommend to my brides that they should choose their dress first and then choose their fiance’s outfit based on that.

  3. AVOID LOGOS AND BE CAREFUL WITH PATTERNS

You don’t want your photos to look like an advertisement for your favorite clothing store so stay away from graphics. Also, if you are going to choose a pattern, let the pattern be big! The camera can’t pick up super tiny patterns – try to avoid them whenever possible!

  4. DRESS IT UP

This point is perhaps the most important for me. You already have many selfies or casual pictures with your fiance’ in jeans, so please avoid using jeans for your engagement session. Take this opportunity to dress up like you mean it! there is not such thing as overdressed. Don’t be afraid to rock a brand new outfit. Dress up as you were going to a red carpet event or a cocktail hour at the most exclusive Downtown roof top lounge. Produce yourself!! The saying “Dress to impress” applies in this case. Remember that these images will last a lifetime and you would like to get an OMG every time you look at them or show them to your children and even your grandchildren. Long, flowy dresses and skirts look amazing on camera because they bring extra movement to the photos. Especially when juxtaposed with nature, like a field, vineyard, lake, or beach. Cute, shorter-length dresses photograph beautifully as well if you choose an urban style session for example.

  5. SECOND OUFIT OPTION

Having a second outfit is a must in my opinion. If you’ve booked a long enough session, make sure you bring a second outfit. It’s a great idea to start the session out in a dressy outfit and then change into a casual one mid-way through the session. This will give you so much more variety in your photos!

  6. LONGER SESSIONS

Like I mention previously, booking a longer session it will give you more variety of photos to choose from.

  7. CHOOSE COMFORTABLE SHOES OR BRING TWO PAIRS

Engagement sessions require quite a bit of walking so make sure you feel comfortable in your shoes. Ladies, if you choose to wear heels, bring a pair of flats to change into while moving from one location to another.

  8. BE YOURSELF

Wear clothing that highlights the real you and your personalities, Don’t change a thing. The more comfortable you’re in what you are wearing, the more comfortable you will look in your photos and the more fun you’ll have!

  9. HAIR AND MAKE-UP

Hair and make-up is just as important as your cloths. Either you choose to do it yourself or you hire a professional. This is a great opportunity to schedule an appointment with a make up artist and try something professionally done. Have in mind the location that you choose for your photo session. For example, if you have chosen a summer time you will want to choose a make up that can resist heat or if you are going to be at a misty beach during sunset you might want to choose a make up that resists moisture. Gentlemen, a great grooming also applies to you.

Enjoy yourselves!
